The Box

It was a somewhat cumbersome journey across the rocks.
Neither was gaining sure footing and the box crate kept twisting – its contents shifting from one side to the other.

Up ahead was a small clearing; a less rocky plateau – somewhere to rest and take stock.

Zackory lowered his end to the ground. Steffan followed.
They wandered towards some boulders and sat to rest a while, looking back towards their crate.
It was smoking with steam as the hot sun touched the dampness of an earlier shower.

Zackory pointed with a laugh: “That’s spooky.’ he exclaimed.
Steffan laughed too. “Yes – just to add to the mystery of what’s in it.”

For a while, they stared in silence – still catching their breath.
The last of the steam evaporated into the ether; they stood up – and walked over.
“Only a bit further.” Steffan said, glancing up the remaining slope to its summit.

Somehow, the box seemed heavier now. Maybe they had rested for too long.

Twisting and swaying between them, they reached the top; laid the box down with a gentle thud; and prized it open with a metal bar.
A set of instructions were taped to the underside of the lid.

Several poles and wooden boards were removed and twenty minutes later, a two foot wooden cube sat atop a wooden tripod.
A pipe protruded from one side.

“Aim the lens towards the other peak.” instructed Zackory.
Steffan rotated and re-secured the large cube.
A black velvet cloth was draped down the back.
Steffan looked on, as Zackory suddenly lifted the cloth to expose an upside down landscape.

With dramatic presence, Zackory announced: “I present to you, the camera obscura!”

Rich'd Gentle / Musical Sketchbook Wakefield, UK

Rich'd Gentle composes with physical instruments in preference to using computer DAWs.

"A freshness of quality is produced when working mechanically and where timing sometimes goes out of synch – particularly in a basic set-up with a mix of digital and analogue equipment. But this adds to the discovery and pleasure of creativity. It also makes the mind work in unique ways... and I like that."
